Bungalows In Heaven: The Story of Pandita Ramabai
Pandita Ramabai was born into a Brahmin family in the 19th century. Her father was a Sanskrit scholar, and her mother was a devout Hindu. Ramabai was a bright and inquisitive child, but she was not allowed to attend school. Instead, she was taught at home by her father. Ramabai's father died when she was 12 years old, and her mother remarried. Her stepfather was abusive, and Ramabai was forced to leave home. She wandered around India for several years, begging for food and shelter.
In 1878, Ramabai met an American missionary named Caroline Haskell. Haskell took Ramabai to the United States, where she attended school and college. Ramabai graduated from Wellesley College in 1888, becoming the first Indian woman to earn a college degree.
