Description

This book examines the complex interplay between Christianity, Islam, and nationalism in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, the author provides a nuanced and comprehensive account of how these three forces have shaped Indonesian society and politics from the colonial era to the present day.

The book begins by examining the historical roots of Christianity and Islam in Indonesia, and how these religions have interacted with each other and with the Indonesian nationalist movement. It then analyzes the role of religion in Indonesian politics, both during the authoritarian New Free Download regime (1966-1998) and in the more democratic era that followed. Finally, the book explores the challenges and opportunities facing Indonesia as it navigates the complex terrain of religious diversity and nationalism in the 21st century.
