Early Life

Gabby Douglas was born on December 31, 1995, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is the youngest of four children. Her parents, Timothy Douglas and Natalie Hawkins, divorced when she was three years old. Gabby and her siblings were raised by their mother, who worked two jobs to support the family.

Gabby began gymnastics at the age of six. She quickly showed a natural talent for the sport, and she began competing in local competitions at the age of eight. By the age of 12, she had won several state and regional championships.

Olympic Dream

In 2012, Gabby Douglas made history by becoming the first African American woman to qualify for the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. She was just 16 years old at the time, and she was the youngest member of the team.

At the Olympic Games in London, Gabby Douglas helped the U.S. team win the gold medal in the team competition. She also became the first African American woman to win the individual all-around gold medal.
