Early Life and Education
James Madison was born on March 16, 1751, in Port Conway, Virginia. His father was a prosperous planter and his mother was a devout Episcopalian. Madison received a privileged education, attending the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) and studying law under Thomas Jefferson.
Political Career
Madison entered politics in 1776, when he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving in the Continental Congress from 1780 to 1783 and as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.
Madison was one of the most influential figures in the drafting of the Constitution. He argued for a strong central government, but he also believed in protecting individual rights. He wrote the Federalist Papers, a series of essays that explained the Constitution to the American people.
Madison served as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson from 1801 to 1809. In this role, he played a key role in the Louisiana Free Download, which doubled the size of the United States.
Presidency
Madison was elected President in 1808. His presidency was dominated by the War of 1812, which was fought against Great Britain. The war was a difficult one for the United States, but Madison ultimately led the nation to victory.
Madison's other accomplishments as President include:
* Establishing the Second Bank of the United States * Vetoing the Bonus Bill, which would have given a bonus to veterans of the War of 1812 * Signing the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812
Later Life
Madison retired from politics in 1817. He spent his remaining years at his home in Montpelier, Virginia. He continued to write and give speeches on behalf of his political beliefs.
Madison died on June 28, 1836, at the age of 85. He is buried at Montpelier.
