In 1948, the British government passed the British Nationality Act, which granted citizenship to all Commonwealth citizens. This led to a wave of immigration from the Caribbean, as people sought to take advantage of the new opportunities available to them. Between 1955 and 1962, over 100,000 people arrived in the UK from the Caribbean, many of them children.

These children were often sent to live with relatives in the UK, and many of them were not aware that they were not British citizens. They grew up believing that they were British, and they often served in the British armed forces or worked in public service.

However, in 2018, the Windrush scandal erupted. It was revealed that the Home Office had been wrongly deporting Commonwealth citizens who had arrived in the UK before 1973. Many of these people had been living in the UK for decades, and they had no idea that they were not British citizens.

The Windrush scandal has had a devastating impact on the lives of many people. Some have been deported, while others have been denied access to healthcare, housing, and other essential services. The scandal has also cast a shadow over the UK's relationship with the Caribbean.

Mother Country is a powerful and moving account of the Windrush scandal. It tells the real stories of the children who were brought to the UK from the Caribbean, only to be denied citizenship and deported. The book is a testament to the resilience of these individuals, and it shines a light on a forgotten chapter in British history.
