After graduating from Oxford, Pearson returned to Canada and began his career in public service. He worked as a historian and diplomat, and he eventually became the Canadian ambassador to the United States. In 1948, he was appointed Secretary of State for External Affairs, a position he held until 1957.

As Secretary of State, Pearson played a key role in the development of Canada's foreign policy. He was a strong advocate for peace and international cooperation, and he helped to establish the United Nations. He also played a leading role in the Suez Crisis of 1956, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to resolve the crisis.

In 1963, Pearson was elected Prime Minister of Canada. He led the country through a period of great change and prosperity, and he is often credited with helping to create the modern Canadian state. He retired from politics in 1968, and he died in 1972.

Skelton's biography of Pearson is a comprehensive and well-written account of his life and career. Skelton draws on a wide range of sources, including Pearson's personal papers, and he provides a nuanced and insightful analysis of Pearson's character and motivations.

Skelton's book is essential reading for anyone interested in Canadian history or in the life and career of Lester B. Pearson. It is a well-written and engaging biography that provides a fascinating insight into one of Canada's most important and influential prime ministers.
