After graduating from Oxford, Pearson returned to Canada and began his career in public service. He worked as a historian and diplomat, and he eventually became the Canadian ambassador to the United States. In 1948, he was appointed Secretary of State for External Affairs, a position he held until 1957.

As Secretary of State, Pearson played a key role in the development of Canada's foreign policy. He was a strong advocate for peace and international cooperation, and he helped to establish the United Nations.
