My Desertion Court Martial And Forty Year Imprisonment In North Korea
In 1964, Charles Robert Jenkins, an American soldier, deserted his unit in South Korea and walked across the Demilitarized Zone into North Korea. He was immediately detained by North Korean authorities and subjected to a series of interrogations and forced indoctrination sessions. Eventually, Jenkins was sentenced to hard labor at a political prison camp known as Camp 14.
Jenkins spent the next 40 years in Camp 14, enduring unimaginable hardships. He was forced to work long hours in a coal mine and was subjected to regular beatings and torture. He also witnessed the deaths of many of his fellow prisoners.

Despite the unimaginable hardships he endured, Jenkins never gave up hope. He secretly resisted his captors by learning Korean and studying the works of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. He also organized a group of fellow prisoners to form a resistance movement.
In 2004, Jenkins was finally released from Camp 14. He was helped to return to the United States, where he was reunited with his family.
