Formation and Training

The 362nd Fighter Group was formed in September 1942 at Mitchel Field, New York. The group was originally equipped with P-40 Warhawks, but these were later replaced by P-47 Thunderbolts. The 362nd trained at several bases in the United States before being deployed to Europe in March 1944.

Combat in Europe

The 362nd Fighter Group arrived in Europe in March 1944 and was assigned to the Ninth Air Force.
