Formation and Training

The 362nd Fighter Group was formed in September 1942 at Mitchel Field, New York. The group was originally equipped with P-40 Warhawks, but these were later replaced by P-47 Thunderbolts. The 362nd trained at several bases in the United States before being deployed to Europe in March 1944.

Combat in Europe

The 362nd Fighter Group arrived in Europe in March 1944 and was assigned to the Ninth Air Force. The group's first combat mission was on April 12, 1944, when it escorted bombers on a raid over Germany. The 362nd quickly gained a reputation for its skill and aggressiveness in combat. The group's pilots shot down over 600 enemy aircraft during the war, including 104 on a single day in August 1944.

Notable Aces

The 362nd Fighter Group produced several notable aces, including:

  • Colonel Francis "Gabby" Gabreski: 34.5 victories
  • Major Robert Johnson: 27 victories
  • Captain Thomas McGuire: 38 victories
  • Captain John Meyer: 24 victories
  • Captain Donald Gentile: 21 victories

Legacy

The 362nd Fighter Group was deactivated in December 1945. The group's legacy lives on, however, in the stories of its brave pilots and the aircraft they flew. The 362nd Fighter Group is a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who fought in World War II.
