Oskar was just six years old when the abuse began. His stepfather would beat him with a belt, punch him in the face, and lock him in a closet for hours at a time. Oskar's mother was no help; she would often join in on the abuse. For years, Oskar lived in constant fear, never knowing when the next attack would come. He was too terrified to tell anyone what was happening, and he felt like he had no one to turn to.

Things got even worse when Oskar's stepfather lost his job. The family was evicted from their home and forced to live on the streets. Oskar and his siblings were often hungry and cold, and they had to beg for money to survive. Oskar's stepfather became even more abusive, and he would often take his anger out on Oskar. Oskar felt like he was trapped in a nightmare, and he didn't know how he was going to survive.
